San José Villanueva is a district of the municipality of La Libertad Este in the La Libertad Department of El Salvador. According to the 2024 population and housing census, the district has 19,150 inhabitants, up from 13,576 in 2007. The territory has an area of about 34.37 km2 (13.27 sq mi) and lies at an elevation of roughly 552 m (1,811 ft) above sea level. San José Villanueva forms part of the southern portion of the department and is bordered by Nuevo Cuscatlán to the north, Huizúcar to the east, the port of La Libertad to the south and Zaragoza to the west. As part of a nationwide municipal reorganization applied in May 2024, the former municipality of San José Villanueva became a district within the newly created municipality of La Libertad Este.
